Getting support / Contact Us
How do I get the Support I need?
Initial Assessments
When you contact us, we will make an appointment for you to attend an Initial Assessment of Support Needs interview at the Learning Support Service. This is an informal meeting with a member of the Team to talk about the type of support you may need at College. This meeting is confidential and may take between 30 and 60 minutes. You can bring someone with you if that makes you feel more comfortable.
You can pick up a form from Learning Support Service, which tells you exactly what happens in an Initial Assessment of Support Needs interview, if you would like to know what to expect.
After the meeting we will start collating transitional information and carry out any further assessment such as risk assessments. If after this stage it's appropriate and available, we will organise your support. If you have asked for a Learning Support Assistant or mentor, we will introduce you to them before the support begins.
Your support at College will be reviewed every term and we will monitor with you and your personal tutor whether this needs to be changed, reduced, increased or withdrawn at any point during the academic year.
"The support I have received has encouraged me to continue with my college education."

Funding Your Study
Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA)
Students, who have been diagnosed with dyslexia by an Educational Psychologist or those who have any other Specific Learning Difficulty or disability, can apply for a Disabled Students' Allowance if they are studying on a Higher Education Course.
If you are eligible, you will need to apply to your Local Education Authority for your DSA. If awarded, the DSA will provide assistive technology and fund the specialist support sessions.
For more information you can contact us by post, phone, minicom, fax or email and request further information packs on various aspects of support that Newcastle College offers.
The service is very effective and if I have any problems they help me deal with them."
